The ability of economic regions to attract and retain the necessary talent to remain competitive and grow is becoming more increasing tied to place.  Richard Florida, renowned social economic researcher, had this to say about attracting the creative class: “Place is becoming more relevant to the global economy and our individual lives.  It is arguably the most important decision we make, as important as choosing a spouse or a career.”

This presentation applies Florida’s research on the importance of place to Rochester - drawing from Rochester labor market information and the recently completed “AboutYoU!” Community Asset Inventory.  Attendees will be given a high level view of Rochester’s “creative class”, its connection to the global economy and engage in a discussion about place, findings from the AboutYoU! Survey and the role of human resource professionals/business organizations in strategically positioning themselves to remain competitive.

Learning Outcome #1 – Attendees will learn about the unique attributes of Rochester’s workforce

Learning Outcome #2 – Attendees will learn about the context of place and its importance to economic competitiveness

Learning Outcome #3 – Attendees will learn about the creative class’s perspective of Rochester

Learning Outcome #4 – Attendees be able to identify strategies that enhance talent attraction and retention
